Welcome to "Dragging Kids Uphills"! A place for a Christchurch based, adventure loving family of four to share the literal ups-and-downs of exploring this amazing landscape with two young girls in tow. We do this adventuring in the hope of raising kids that will appreciate and protect this world, along with being confident in their ability to explore it skillfully and enjoy the outdoors in this modern world we live in.

    Inspire

Maybe just maybe, with us getting out there and sharing some experiences/images with you, we can motivate you and your family to strap on your boots and get amongst it. See you out there!

    Be Prepared

Sometimes it just seems too hard to anticipate what you'll need for a good hike with the kids in tow. There are so many variables to think about - but this is where we aim to share our gathered knowledge with you and take care of the `it's too hard` stuff via some experience and insight.

Always with a camera at arms reach, we'll be showcasing the beautiful locations we visit in the hope of getting you motivated to see them for yourself - @kellyshakespearephotography

    The Dragging Kids Uphill Team

We do this exploring in the hope of raising some adventurous kids who will appreciate and protect our stunning world. We want to build their confidence and give them the ability to explore the outdoors skilfully, enjoying a natural environment in this ever modern world. But really, we're just your average New Zealand family chasing adventures (and waterfalls!) in our neck of the woods. We hope you enjoy seeing what we get up to and most of all we hope that we can inspire you and your family to get out yourselves!

    KELLY SHAKESPEARE
    Christchurch, New Zealand

Does less of the organisational stuff than Jarred but makes up for it with enthusiasm on the day. She’s also the photographer behind @kellyshakespearephotography, hence the overload of photos from each and every hike! You’ll probably never see a photo of her that isn’t a selfie cause that’s just how photographer life rolls.

    JARRED SHAKESPEARE
    Christchurch, New Zealand

Is the one who organises everything, sources the best gear for our trips and does almost all of the research! Generally a bit of a mountain goat and the kids preferred walking partner – they think he’s the most ”fun” and has the better stories!  Also a full-time Art Director during the week.

    ALBA/MAYA SHAKESPEARE
    Christchurch, New Zealand

Alba – Six years old and our team cheerleader!  Alba encourages her sister every step of the way and offers great conversation on the trail. Sometimes gets a bit “Shouty Arthur” and scares away the wildlife before we get to see it but is working on this. Definitely the sassiest of the bunch with the best/worst puns.

Maya – At only four years old Maya is an absolute trooper and will out-walk the rest of us with a grin on her face – MOST of the time. She does throw a mighty fine tantrum now and then, as all four-year-olds do which normally results in a piggyback ride. She also laughs 9/10 times that she falls over

Teaching children about the natural world should be treated as one of the most important events in their lives.Thomas Berry
